Julia with Hollis Briggs, Jr. -- who was on Julia's PAYROLL at that time.
CEO of Novant Carl S. Armato with Hollis Briggs, Jr., on the NIGHT OF THE VOTE!!!

Mayor "Bill" Saffo), THIS NEW PIECE by her is IMPROVED in that it PROPERLY IDENTIFIES First Presbyterian Elder William Rand Kenan, Sr., as WHO REALLY LED IT -- and Capt. Although Jan Davidson KNOWS that Kenan's son, William Rand Kenan, JUNIOR, financed Hitler's RISE TO POWER and TOTALLY BANKROLLED and SUPPLIED most of the DISTILLED PETROLEUM PRODUCTS that fueled Hitler's WAR MACHINE, Jan is a TOTAL CHRISTIAN C*U*N*T -- and I HOPE she NEVER GETS LAID -- LOL!!!

The Kenan Memorial Fountain is a large, ornate, tiered fountain. It is made of limestone and is decorated with turtles, fish, and gargoyles. It sits in the middle of the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Market Street and has done so for nearly a century. The fountain was originally donated to the City of Wilmington by William Rand Kenan, Jr. as a memorial to his parents, William Rand Kenan, Sr. and Mary Hargrave Kenan, who died in 1903 and 1916 respectively.
At 11 AM on April 14, 2005, the City of Wilmington held a rededication ceremony for the Kenan Memorial Fountain. The fountain had recently undergone a major renovation. The ceremony was held at the Bellamy Mansion, and Mayor Spence Broadhurst welcomed the crowd. Architectural historian Ed Turberg spoke about the fountain’s history. During the event, one of the fountain’s original turtle water spouts was formally presented to Cape Fear Museum. It had been removed as a part of the renovation. All the turtles had been damaged by time and the elements, and the city wanted one to be stabilized and preserved. The turtle remains a part of the Museum collection.

The fountain was designed by Carrere and Hastings, a prominent architectural firm in the early 20th century. William hired the firm in February 1920 and presented the city with a completed design when he requested permission to build the 14-foot tall memorial. The Wilmington Morning Star described the plan for the fountain as a “thing of beauty.” City council agreed to accept the fountain in January 1921, but it took some time to complete. Work began on the “magnificent memorial” in August. It was then delayed when quarry workers in New England went on strike. It took until February of 1922 for the stone to come to the city. And it was a few more months before the fountain was finally completed. The city turned on the water on May 26, 1922.
When William Jr. donated the fountain to the city, he lived in Lockport, New York. He made a fortune through his own work and inherited an even larger sum from his sister, Mary Lily Kenan Flagler Bingham. Kenan, Jr. used some of his wealth to fund the memorial fountain as an homage to his parents, Mary Hargrave Kenan and William Rand Kenan. William Sr. was born in Kenansville, North Carolina in 1845. He attended UNC Chapel Hill, where he met the woman who would become his wife, Mary Hargrave. Mary, who was known as Mollie, was a member of a rich and influential Chapel Hill family and her inherited wealth. William Sr. served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and the pair married in 1864. The couple had four children. The family moved to Wilmington and by the 1870s, Kenan was a merchandise broker. In the 1890s, Kenan was appointed to the Wilmington’s Collector of Customs. This was a lucrative federal appointment. Kenan lost this position when President William C. McKinley appointed John C. Dancy, an African American Republican, to the post in 1898.
After the Civil War, Kenan, Sr. was an active member and leader of the Wilmington Light Infantry (WLI), a local militia unit. He was the commander of the WLI unit until 1892, and still headed the veteran and reserve squad in 1898. Because of this military service, he was known as Captain Kenan for the last decades of his life. Kenan was also a leader in the local Democratic Party, and a leader of the 1898 White Supremacy campaign and massacre. Kenan, Sr. was in charge of a “rapid-fire” gun squad during the violence. The gun was mounted to a wagon, and the squad roamed the city’s streets, terrorizing the African American population. Although accounts are contradictory, Kenan’s gun squad was responsible for perhaps as many as 25 deaths in the massacre. When Kenan, Sr. died five years later, his role in the massacre was not mentioned as a part of his legacy.

When the Kenan Memorial Fountain was first put in place, it was larger than it is today. The fountain’s location in the middle of an intersection means it has been the scene of many traffic accidents. As more and more cars filled the city streets, the fountain became more of a problem for traffic. By 1950, some city council members suggested moving the fountain elsewhere. William R. Kenan, Jr. was upset by the idea the fountain should be moved and declared, “My personal opinion is that the location of the fountain is a benefit from every point of view.” After this debate, the city did not move the fountain; instead, it was made smaller. Starting in 1952, the lower section was removed. In 1953, a commemorative plaque was added to the fountain, perhaps in an effort to soothe William Kenan, Jr.’s feelings about the changes to the original design and size. It stated, “Through the medium of this bronze tablet, authorized by Wilmington City Council and placed in 1953 a grateful citizenry expresses profound appreciation for the action of Mr. William R. Kenan, Jr. in presenting to his native city this lovely fountain.”
The city and state debated the fountain’s location again in the 1960s. In 1969, the State Highway Commission recommended the fountain be removed. The commission made the recommendation because the intersection had one of the highest accident rates in town. City council members, while recognizing the issue of accidents, were torn about moving the fountain. Wilmington architect Leslie Boney spoke to the city council at a meeting in December 1969, and he persuaded the council members to formally oppose moving the memorial. At the time, Boney described the fountain as “…the most attractive spot in Wilmington.” Since the late 1960s, the city has spent hundreds of thousands of public and private dollars to repair, renovate, and add safety features to the fountain plaza. During the 2004-2005 renovation, city officials declared the fountain was a priceless and irreplaceable artwork.

In the past few years, there have again been rumblings in the community about moving the fountain for safety reasons. There have also been concerns about the association of the fountain with William Rand Kenan, Sr. In 2019, the Wilmington Star-News raised concerns about memorializing a white supremacist, and noted that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill renamed their Kenan Memorial Stadium after Kenan, Jr. because of Kenan, Sr.’s role in the 1898 massacre. So far, the City of Wilmington has not seemed interested in moving or renaming the fountain. The fountain continues to be the scene of many accidents. A 2012 article stated that it had been struck at least seven times between 2001 and 2012. In most cases, alcohol was involved. The fountain was just recently repaired once more, after being damaged during 2018’s Hurricane Florence.
