Trump administration officials fired more than 300 staffers Thursday night at the National Nuclear Security Administration — the agency tasked with managing the nation’s nuclear stockpile — as part of broader Energy Department layoffs, according to four people with knowledge of the matter.

Sources told CNN the officials did not seem to know this agency oversees America’s nuclear weapons.

An Energy Department spokesperson disputed the number of personnel affected, telling CNN that “less than 50 people” were “dismissed” from NNSA, and that the dismissed staffers “held primarily administrative and clerical roles.”

The agency began rescinding the terminations Friday morning.

Some of the fired employees included NNSA staff who are on the ground at facilities where nuclear weapons are built. These staff oversee the contractors who build nuclear weapons, and they inspect these weapons.

It also included employees at NNSA headquarters who write requirements and guidelines for contractors who build nuclear weapons. A source told CNN they believe these individuals were fired because “no one has taken anytime to understand what we do and the importance of our work to the nation’s national security.”

The fact that the Florida-based televangelist will now have a job at the White House suggests it’s probably worth taking a look at her record.

In 2019, for example, White told her viewers that they had to support her ministry, even if they’re struggling, or God would kill their dreams. The same week, White told viewers that some states have “already passed” laws declaring the Christian Bible as “hate speech,” which is why America needs Trump’s judicial nominees to be confirmed. (There are no such state laws.)

The Hill also noted that White delivered an opening prayer before Trump’s re-election campaign kickoff, saying “demonic networks” had aligned themselves against the Republican. As People for the American Way noted, it was a familiar refrain: In the wake of Trump’s 2020 defeat, the same televangelist held multiple emergency prayer services to battle the “demonic confederacies“ that were supposedly trying to steal the election.

The same report from People for the American Way added: White joined Trump at the Jan. 6 rally that preceded the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, where she prayed that God would give rallygoers a “holy boldness” and that “every adversary” would “be overturned right now in the name of Jesus.” ... White has repeatedly declared that her mere presence in the White House makes it “holy ground” and warned that to oppose Trump is to oppose God.

It’s not altogether clear what White’s responsibilities will be leading the White House Faith Office, or whether she intends to accept a taxpayer-funded salary.

John Kennedy Toole (December 17, 1937 – March 26, 1969) was an American novelist from New Orleans, Louisiana, whose posthumously published novel, A Confederacy of Dunces, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981. Although several people in the literary world felt his writing skills were praiseworthy, Toole's novels were rejected during his lifetime. Due in part to these failures, he suffered from paranoia and depression, dying by suicide at the age of 31.

After Toole's death, Thelma Toole suffered from depression for two years, and the manuscript for A Confederacy of Dunces remained atop an armoire in his former room. She then determined to find a publisher, believing it would be an opportunity to prove her son's talent. Over a five-year period, she sent it to seven publishers, but all rejected it. "Each time it came back, I died a little," she said. However, in 1976 she became aware that author Walker Percy was joining the faculty of Loyola University New Orleans. To get Percy to read the manuscript, Thelma began a campaign of phone calls and letters. Percy complained to his wife about a peculiar old woman's attempts to contact him. With time running out on Percy's term as professor, Thelma pushed her way into his office and demanded he read the manuscript. Initially hesitant, Percy agreed to read the book to stop her badgering. He admitted to hoping it would be so bad that he could discard it after reading a few pages. Ultimately, he loved the book, commenting in disbelief:

"In this case I read on. And on. First with the sinking feeling that it was not bad enough to quit, then with a prickle of interest, then a growing excitement, and finally an incredulity; surely it was not possible that it was so good."

A Confederacy of Dunces was published by Louisiana State University Press in 1980, and Percy provided the foreword. A year later, in 1981, Toole was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The book eventually sold more than 1.5 million copies, in 18 languages. In 2019, the PBS show The Great American Read ranked A Confederacy of Dunces the 58th (out of 100) most loved book in America.
