Many Husbands Sold Their Wives To Other Men During The Victorian Era
Wife selling was once a common practice

Before legal divorce became a regular practice, “wife selling” was a fairly popular way to end a bad marriage during the victorian era. Through public separation, it allowed couples to go their separate ways if they wanted to do so.
This method of separation was mostly used in the rural areas and is believed to be of Anglo-Saxon origin. It was prevalent during the 17th and 19th centuries, but was relatively persistent until the early 20th century.
The process of wife selling
Any husband that wished to auction his wife would first register her as a commodity for sale. Then he would take her to a public meeting point where she would be paraded with a halter around her neck or waist.
The auction was usually done in public places like taverns, fairs or marketplace. Some men even used ropes around the necks of their wives.
Prior to the auction, an announcement would have been made to stir up interest in potential suitors. An auctioneer would also be available to preside over the auction.
Not all auctions were public, there were private ones too. What mattered most was the presence of witnesses during the auction. The husband would then proceed to declare his wife’s virtues to onlookers during the auction.
The suitors were usually men who were looking for women that had been married. Some agents also bargained for wives on behalf of wealthy merchants. Sometimes, the family members of the wife would also form part of the crowd of onlookers.
