1. To begin with, there are MANY conflicting reports of the founding of Standard Oil, but the truth seems to be that Henry Flagler founded it, then soon took on Rockefeller and his first father-in-law, Harkness as equal partners. Over the years, Flagler got back control of much of the Harkness portion, giving him the lion's share of stock.
2. John D. 3. But going back further, the Kenan Family had clear-cut S.E. North Carolina's virgin pine forests, becoming the WORLD'S largest supplier of naval stores -- before the Revolutionary War (hence the "Tar Heels" name for teams at UNC), having 1 - 3 properties (I never found which number for certain), with over 300 African slaves -- and the need to keep moving to the edge of the forest kept them from building a HUGE manor house.
The Kenans spread out from North Carolina to settle also in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Florida, and held many high political positions as well as being socially and financially prominent -- and I have seen they were a STRONG force for Secession.
4. At the time of the break-up of Standard Oil in 1911, Henry Flagler was quite feeble, and William R. Kenan, Jr. handled all of that for him.
A dog, Mr. Flagler, and a servant.
The Kenans spread out from North Carolina to settle also in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Florida, and held many high political positions as well as being socially and financially prominent -- and I have seen they were a STRONG force for Secession.

And the funny thing is that the Kenans all knew Flagler was leaving it all to Mary Lily (Kenan) Flagler, and in the year that FOLLOWED the break-up into 34 separate companies, the STOCK of all those new companies rose OVER 100% in value -- because the PUBLIC LOVED what had happened -- and the Kenans were set to inherit TWICE as much as they had expected in 1910!!!
5. Today, Thomas S. Kenan III, and his father's second wife and widow Betty (Price) Kenan hold the "Kenan Reins" of the companies and the Charitable Trusts.
A typical Episcopalian sycophant, Betty in Chinese brocade and holding a puppy, and Tom, a-drinkin'.
6. Of course the MORAL of the story is that the thing you fear MOST (breaking up of your monopoly), can benefit you MOST via the Law of Unintended Consequences!!!
In THIS case, they got BETTER consequences!!!

I was Tennessee Williams's last assistant and Jackie Kennedy Onassis told us at a party on January 11, 1982 that the CIA, FBI, Episcopal Church, and Republican Party would murder him and steal his estate from Harvard -- which I can PROVE they actually DID.
