>>> A PATHETIC ATTEMPT OF METHODIST CHRISTIANS TO SHIRK RESPONSIBILITY:
Bishop Peter Storey of South Africa - His extemporaneous prayer at DFUMC on April 17, 2016
O God, You are so big and we are so small,
And we are so quick to think we are right, and that we have all the answers.
We are so quick to speak and slow to listen.
We are so quick to judge and slow to embrace.
In fact, we do church, but we are not sure how often we really are church.
So we ask if You will give us a spirit of humility, and a spirit of listening,
And a new spirit of openness to what You would have us do and be.
We pray for this church we love, the United Methodist Church.
We know that it is just a small part of the great church of God across the world,
But it is the part that we love and belong to, and which has nourished and shaped us.
We pray that we may become a more faithful church.
We pray that You will rescue us from our bureaucratic enslavement,
And that You will help us to hear again the simple voice of Jesus calling us
To those amazing values of the Sermon on the Mount of Luke, Chapter 4.
Help us always to ask the question:
What does it mean for me to be faithful to You in the here and now,
To do what You would have me do,
To be with whom You would have me be with,
To embrace those You would want me to embrace,
To welcome those You would want me to welcome,
To challenge those You would want me to challenge,
To just follow You?
So help us to be more faithful followers in the days to come… Amen
