Authorities in the popular cruise ship destination of Puerto Vallarta are searching for a member of the municipal council who went missing last week, the attorney general in the western Mexican state of Jalisco said.
Humberto Gomez Arevalo's family reported him missing after his vehicle was found abandoned last Friday.
"There is an open investigation," state Attorney General Luis Carlos Najera told reporters. "We are working with (our) delegate in Puerto Vallarta. We are thinking about sending specialized personnel."
Najera referred to "advances in the investigation," but said he could not offer details due to the gravity of the case.
The councilor's family said nothing about his being threatened or extorted, the attorney general said.
Another member of the Puerto Vallarta city council, Susana Mendoza CarreƱo, said that in the days prior to his disapperance she overheard an apparently desperate Gomez Arevalo arranging to borrow 50,000 pesos ($3,412) to finance a medical procedure for his mother.
Gomez Arevalo sent an assistant to a shopping mall parking lot to collect the cash, Mendoza told Radio Formula.
