Greek Feast of St. Vasilios: Vasilopeta

For Greeks, Jan. 1 has double significance. Not only is it New Year’s Day, it is also the Feast of St. Vasilios (Basil, in English), one of the most important saints in the Greek Orthodox pantheon.

Many Greeks celebrate with a special cake, vasilopeta, which is baked with a coin inside. When the cake is sliced, the first serving goes to the oldest person in the household, and subsequent slices are passed out in order of age. According to tradition, whoever gets the slice with the coin can expect very good luck in the new year.

“The cake blesses the house and the person with the coin,” says Renée Saffo, whose family – and that of her husband, Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo – comes from the Aegean island of Ikaria.

She says her husband has a special connection with the traditional Greek New Year’s cake.

“A couple of years ago, he got the coin in his slice of vasilopeta. It was even more meaningful because Bill’s formal name is Vassilios, so New Year’s Day is his name day. In Greece, you celebrate the day of the saint for whom you are named,” she says.

Bill Saffo says he carries that lucky coin with him all the time.

And the night before last, Mayor Saffo arrived late to hear the City Council Candidates speak -- and he left early. I had emailed him so he knew I would be there -- BUT THAT I WOULD NOT EMBARASS HIM IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE!!!

He was nervous, fingering that coin in his pants-pocket and power-chewing a big wad of gum, and he gave me the "EVIL EYE" when I caught his -- although I had HOPED we might speak and GET PAST THE ANIMOSITY !!!

Remember, on February 13, 2017, I emailed him warning I was walking to his office to DEMAND the REAL ACCIDENT REPORT on my friend Evan Fish's death when "Bill" had Christian Police Officers force Evan to jump to his death from the top of the parking deck next to the downtown Library on Sept. 3, 2011.

It was during that lecture that Ben David emphasized HOW HELPFUL IN ENDING VIOLENCE it is to PUT OUT THE WORD on who is LIKELY to become VERY VIOLENT !!!

And then, I looked at those on his BOARD -- and HALF ARE HUGE, WHITE-COLLAR CRIMINALS !!!

JUST LIKE BEN AND HIS BROTHER, D.A. JON DAVID OF BRUNSWICK COUNTY!!!

Strangely, I happened to call Matt Rhodes, a Republican who ran for Sheriff as well as for County Commissioner several years ago -- and HE wants to get together for coffee and to discuss POLITICS!!! 3. And AGAIN, this past weekend, there was a big PROTEST DOWNTOWN about how POOR THE CARE THERE has become under NOVANT OWNERSHIP -- especially if you use the Emergency Room.

Yes, MOST of Wilmington's current woes stem from the  sale of the Hospital  and the MISMANAGEMENT of the HUGE SLUSH FUND that is  supposed to be used to help addicts and criminals reform, alleviate homelessness and hunger, etc.

4. Those in Law Enforcement and the Press will be convicted of SUPPORTING TRUMP AND HIS PARTNERS: Mayor Saffo, former D.A. David, Police Chief Evangelous (who smoked CRACK daily in a house owned by the uncle of a friend of mine), and Sheriff Ed McMahon (who with Republican David Rouzer, was given HIGHEST HONORS at Donald Trump's SECOND INAUGURATION)!!!

Wilmington's Citizens will CLAIM they had NO IDEA THESE CHRISTIANS WERE SO EVIL!!! Same as what the German Citizens claimed about the CHRISTIAN NAZIS!!!
